The 2018 Excavation Diary
We are intending to conduct two excavations in 2018, the first one running from Monday 14th May to Friday 25th May and the second running from Monday 3rd September to Friday 21st September.
The May excavation is to further examine the splayed base on the North West corner of the Keep from the path that surrounds the top of the mound (Trench T7N on the plan below). As there is limited space between the trench and the railing fence this will be excavated as a series of sections which can then be backfilled as they are completed. If time allows we will also excavate Trench T7S to the South of Trench T7N.
The September excavation (Trench T8 on the plan) is a continuation of Trench 6 of September 2017 and will extend the excavation of the South wall of the Keep. This will complete our investigation of the four faces of the Keep and we hope to discover the foundations of a forebuilding, a staircase which gave access to the Keep entrance.
Visitors are always welcome and there will be an information officer one site to explain what we are excavating and how this relates to previous excavations.
